ABOUT US

The Dallas-Fort Worth Herpetological Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit society.  Our mission is to promote understanding, appreciation, and conservation of reptiles and amphibians; encourage respect for their habitats; and foster responsible captive care.  Membership is open to anyone with an interest in reptiles and amphibians (herps).  Our members include professional biologists and amateur naturalists with years of experience, as well as those with a beginning interest in herps (either keeping and breeding them, or seeing them in the wild).
Our society provides a number of services for members and for the community.  We attend meetings to learn from speakers, and we network together to exchange experiences or get together for field trips.  We participate in educational events for the community in conjunction with museums and nature centers.  The society has helped survey the herps found in two DFW area nature centers.  We regularly go on field trips to various places in Texas, photographing and documenting reptiles and amphibians and sharing the data with universities, the National Park Service, etc.

We meet the third Saturday of every month, and our meetings feature speakers who bring great information, and beautiful slides illustrating animals and the places where they live.  Meetings have covered topics as diverse as herping Africa, South America, and here at home in Texas, a glimpse into the operations of major breeders, and the problem of rattlesnake roundups. Our meetings are held at the University of Texas at Arlington, at 7:00pm. We encourage members to arrive anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes early in order to meet old or new friends.
