Introduction:
Many small native snakes are often overlooked.  The prairie Ringneck (Diadophis punctatus arnyi) is no exception.  This shy little snake is unique and interesting, allow me to show you.   At first glance, this small snake looks dull and ordinary.   The only thing that might catch your eye is the colorful band behind its head.  This might be enough to make you want to examine it closer.  As your hand reaches for it your eye catches a bright flash of color.  This flash of color is so intense it causes you to pause for an instant.  The snake's defense worked!  It has disappeared into the ground through a small hole you did not notice.  Ringnecks are usually found in numbers, so maybe you will have better luck with the next rock!
